Cathcart intersections to reopen soon

Two intersections along Cathcart Boulevard in Sarnia are scheduled to reopen before Tuesday morning when area schools welcome students back.

The intersection of Indian Road and Cathcart Boulevard closed to traffic in June to install a mini-roundabout. In July, the intersection of Cathcart Boulevard and Murphy Road was closed to add curb bump-outs, traffic signals, and enhanced pedestrian crossings.

City of Sarnia Manager of Development and Transportation Alister Brown said for the most part, the projects went according to plan without major problems.

"The projects [have] progressed really well and according to schedule," he said. "Obviously we've had our fair share of weather delays throughout the summer but that's to be expected during any construction season. Things have tracked really well."

During the construction process, there were some issues with motorists disobeying road closure signs.

"As the project went along and the roundabout, in particular, started to take shape with the curb going in and the first layer of asphalt going down, particularly outside of working hours, people certainly started to ignore some of the signage that was posted," Brown said. "Obviously that's not recommended and we did have, from time to time, enforcement by Sarnia police."

On August 20, Sarnia Police Service reminded motorists over social media to obey road signage after officers stopped 12 vehicles at the Cathcart Boulevard and Murphy Road intersection.

When the intersections reopen, Brown asked that everyone be cautious.

"These are new traffic situations for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists alike at these two intersections so I would just like to say please exercise additional caution and obey all signage as you begin to familiarize yourself with these intersections and the configurations there, particularly with school starting back up on [September] 5th," he said. "Let's all do our part to keep each other safe on the road."

The City of Sarnia will post an update on the road status over social media.

As previously reported, the approximate contract value for the work at both intersections was $2.11 million.

Brown said they're expecting to finish well within the city's budget and may even see a surplus.
