Life of popular Polish astronomer showcased at Lambton Mall

The life and discoveries of Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus are being celebrated at the Lambton Mall this weekend.

A display has been set up near the food court, in honour of the 550th anniversary of the Renaissance polymath's birth.

He's best known for coming up with the "Heliocentric model" of the universe, that placed the sun rather than Earth at its centre.

This theory was eventually proven correct by Italian Astronomer Galileo, which opened up the concept of space.

The Polish Alliance of Canada Branch 14 is sponsoring the event.

Spokesperson Krystyna Stalmach encourages everyone to come out for an educational experience.

"They can see the biography of Nicolaus Copernicus, we call him Mikolaj Kopernik, in Polish," said Stalmach. "They can also see his achievements and what he proved. There's also some information about the history of Poland and of Europe. We'd like everyone to come here and see this display. This is a perfect example of collaboration between the Polish organization and businesses here. We are welcomed by Guest Services at Lambton Mall since about 2010. Every year, we have one of our displays or bring one from somewhere else."

This year's display is a travelling one, and is housed in Windsor.

It's printed in English, French and Polish, and can be seen throughout Ontario at various malls and events.

The display can be viewed near the Food Court from 9:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
