Sarnia council briefs

Sarnia council approved more funding to support the construction of gender-neutral dressing rooms at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

The contingency funding, amounting to $170,000, will be used to cover unanticipated costs to build two new change-room spaces by converting the old Sarnia Sting change room.

The total design and construction budget is $700,000.

Any of the funding that is not required will be returned to reserves.

A five-year proposal has been approved to run recreation programming at Camp Saredaca.

The YMCA of Southwestern Ontario, which has run summer camps at the site in recent years, submitted the lone proposal.

Council directed staff to engage in the negotiations required to complete the agreement.

Want to offer a coffee service at the Strangway Community Centre?

City council has directed staff to issue a request for proposals.

Over 200 surveys were completed following council's initial discussion on the issue.

The results found that 175 respondents supported the introduction of a hot beverage service and 155 of those individuals would use it.

Staff initially recommended purchasing two countertop dispenser units, amounting to $8,400 with a $500 monthly fee for a professional service to maintain them.

However, council directed staff to explore alternatives.

Councillors George Vandenberg and Bill Dennis voted against the direction at Monday's meeting.

Sarnia city council unanimously adopted an Affordable Housing Community Improvement Plan [AHCIP].

It will designate the entire geographic area as a community improvement project area.

The AHCIP will be both municipally incentive driven and incentive based.

The Active Transportation Master Plan was adopted as presented at council's January 15 meeting.

The document identifies current gaps in infrastructure and proposed walking and cycling networks in the community.

Councillors Terry Burrell and Bill Dennis voted against the recommendation.

City council agreed to commit up to $25,000 from the Bright’s Grove Library Reserve to fund the development of a capital fundraising campaign.

The funds will be used to pay for the communication materials needed to initiate the campaign successfully.
