Supporting women in business

The Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce continues to encourage and celebrate women in business through an ongoing initiative.

Events and Marketing Coordinator Robin Cooke said Women in Business meetings are held monthly and a keynote speaker is scheduled to present quarterly.

Eloissa Wells of Imperial Oil's Sarnia site was this year's first keynote speaker. During January's luncheon, Cooke said Wells highlighted the work of the company's female employees.

This month's meeting will feature Helen Cole, founder of The Jean Collective, which is an initiative in southwestern Ontario meant to empower women in politics and leadership roles.

"When we invite a speaker for Women in Business, we ask them to come and tell their story, so each one is totally different, and [Cole] has such a wide experience so her story will be particularly interesting," Cooke said.

The Women in Business event is open to anyone who supports the professional and personal growth of women in the community. Cooke said meetings are typically well attended and the audience ranges from entrepreneurs, employees, and supportive men.

"Also at these events, it's a great networking event for women and a support group," she said.

Those interested in attending this month's meeting are asking to pre-register online. The forum will be held at the Dante Club from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on February 22.

Cooke said the next discussion will be held on March 28 with McKenzie Blundy Funeral Home Owner Katherine Scimmi.

The Chamber's Women In Business Committee will also host a special International Women's Day Luncheon on March 7 with keynote speaker Charmaine Crooks, who is a five-time Olympian and president of the Canadian Soccer Association.
