Local transit projects receive funding boost

Lambton Shores has received more funding from the Ontario government for two of its transit projects.

A total of $253,819 was provided through the Community Transportation Grant Program.

Lambton Shores Mayor Doug Cook said this funding is a top-up from a five year grant that expires next year to conduct its transit service.

"This is additional money that we received last year to cover us for the costs of operating our transit system last year," he said. "So, that's the cost of fuel and servicing and drivers of the bus."

The funding will be split between two projects. The first is the intercommunity project, which Cook said has a large involved route.

"Our transit system goes all the way from Sarnia up through to Grand Bend and then continues on through South Huron up to Exeter, Dashwood and down to Lucan and into London," he said.

Meanwhile, $64,349 out of the total funding will be going towards its local project, which goes from Grand Bend to Sarnia as a main run.

Cook said a portion of the funds will help with operating costs.

"We've had very good success with our ridership in our program and this just shows that it is keeping our funding in place to help us at least until 2025," he said.

Cook added there's ridership across all of the communities and it's up 150 per cent over the last year.

"The strongest run is obviously our Sarnia to Grand Bend route because that's where we draw students that come from the college to work in Grand Bend, but there's also people who do it for shopping, they go to different places, " he said.

Cook said he's pleased to see the government is supporting the community.

"The (provincial government) has committed to transit in rural communities and this is their pledge to keep us going," Cook said.
