Petrolia Bluewater Taekwondo celebrates provincial funding

Petrolia Bluewater Taekwondo is celebrating after it received an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant.

On Saturday, the not-for-profit organization hosted an event to celebrate the funding it obtained in the fall.

The club received a total of $62,700 in a capital grant.

President and Master Instructor Becky Brand said a big portion of the funding went to replace their roof.

"We have two buildings and the roof on both of the buildings needed to be replaced, so that was taking a big chunk of our grant and then as well we are updating a lot of our electronics," she said.

According to Brand, the roof has been an ongoing issue the organization has been struggling with.

"Not having the funding over these last couple of years it's been a struggle, so it was just a huge weight off of our shoulders," Brand said.

For the electronics she said this will make the club more modern, cost effective and more efficient.

The roof was completed in the fall and the club is currently finishing up purchasing the new electronics which will help with scheduling, administration and training.

Brand said getting a grant like this helps pay for things they would otherwise have to fundraise for.

"We do receive money from bingos every month but something like a huge capital project like we had with our roof was just something that was going to be a big struggle for us to be able to afford on our own," she said. "Having the grant really helped us to be able to get the roof fixed so that we can ensure that our students have a safe place to work and a dry place to work."

Brand felt super excited when she got the call that the club received the grant.

"I was holding my breath on whether we got it or not, so when we got confirmation that we got it I was definitely doing a happy dance," she said.
