The NuSarnia Foundation will host its first-ever kids bike rally Saturday.
The guided event is for kids 12 and younger and will have bike decorating, obstacle courses, and a rally passport to win prizes.
Kerry Gabriel, Event Manager for NuSarnia, said the goal of the event is to showcase neighbourhood events and active transportation.
"We have a whole route planned out that includes five on-course vendors," she said. "Each of those locations will have a safety question regarding cycling for youth."
She said this was also a way to bring families together.
"Being able to show kids and families the route that we have, which includes Midtown trail, Howard Watson trail and the Wellington multi-use path, so we're really making sure that they understand that there is great space in our community to get out and enjoy themselves," Gabriel said.
Another important part of the event is learning about bicycle safety.
Gabriel said this was part of the planning process while creating the event.
"We were like what can we do to give (kids) a space to enjoy but also have the education piece. Learning about dismounting your bike at a crosswalk and learning how to go across that properly, how do you use your hand signals going through and how do you properly fit your helmet," she said.
Gabriel added the safety aspect will also give the adults a reminder.
She said the goal is to host the event annually.
The bike rally will be held at the Lambton College North Parking Lot from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and is free.
Registration is required and Gabriel said there are limited spots available.
Anyone looking to register can do so on the NuSarnia website.
