A long-time Sarnia sports broadcaster and former voice of the Sarnia Sting has died.
George Heath passed away on Sunday, November 17 at the age of 88.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, Heath moved to Sarnia in 1972 to begin a career with CHOK Radio as sports director, a position he held for nearly 30 years.
His voice was memorable and distinct.
In addition to reading morning sports, Heath and the late Murray Vosbourgh provided play-by-play announcing for Sarnia Sting broadcasts on 103.9FM/1070AM.
After retiring from radio in 2001, Heath continued his work with the Sting until 2004.
In 1974, Heath played a role in bringing legendary boxer Muhammad Ali to Sarnia. He was helping organize the Sertoma Club of Sarnia Sportsman's Dinner when the primary guest, NFL running back Larry Csonka, backed out. His agent offered Ali, who was in Chicago at the time, as a replacement.

In 1977, Heath helped start the YMCA/CHOK Bridge Race. The unique event had runners start in Port Huron and cross the Blue Water Bridge into Sarnia. With hundreds of runners and volunteers, the race was one of the largest local fundraisers for the YMCA in both Port Huron and Sarnia.
In 1986, Heath was recognized by the Sarnia-Lambton Sports Hall of Fame with the Bud Morrison Award, which honours a person who over a number of years made significant contributions to the youth in their sport endeavors.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Smith Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.
A service for Heath will be held on Tuesday, December 10 at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Sarnia.
