Sarnia ceremony marks 85th anniversary of Battle of Britain

Members of the Sarnia Legion and local residents will gather at Germain Park on Sunday to mark the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m., under the Golden Hawk Sabre jet.

Sarnia Legion Branch 62 Media Relations Coordinator Ron Realesmith said the service is very similar to Remembrance Day ceremonies.

"We pay our respects and we lay down wreaths," Realesmith said. "It's something that's important to us as members of the legion and we know it's important to this community, and to our nation quite frankly."

The Battle of Britain is recognized in Canada every year as it marks the Royal Canadian Air Force's first commitment to fight in the Second World War. Over 100 Canadians served in the air force.

"The Allied victory was seen as a critical turning point in the war, preventing the potential invasion of Great Britain and securing freedom for other nations," Realesmith said. "During that time, France had fallen, other nations had fallen in Europe and all eyes were on Great Britain. America wasn't even in the war yet and so that summer, the Canadians showed up and supported Great Britain."

Realesmith said typically about 50 people attend the service.
