Strong Goaltending Stumps Sting

It was a game where Sarnia deserved more than a single point, outshooting Flint 42-23 but ultimately falling to the Firedbirds 3-2 in overtime.

Alex Nedeljkovic may have been wearing a different uniform but it was the same performance between the pipes that won the Carolina Hurricanes prospect goaltender of the year with the Plymouth Whalers.

It was a bit of deja vu for Sarnia to begin the hockey game as Will Bitten opened the scoring for Flint on a penalty shot just 51 seconds into the contest. He scored the overtime winner on a penalty shot October 10 in Michigan to complete a hat trick for the 17-year-old forward. Nikita Korostelev scored later in the frame to tie the game at one through 20 minutes.

Sarnia outshot Flint 13-4 in the second period but neither team were able to break the tie.

Troy Lajeunesse scored his team leading ninth goal of the season to open a 2-1 Sarnia lead. A powerplay goal from Francesco Vilardi tied the game with just over five minutes left and force overtime.

Ryan Moore scored the overtime winner just over a minute into the extra frame.

Justin Fazio returned from injury and stopped 20 of 23 shots.

The Sting are back in action Sunday night at 7:05 when they host Saginaw. The pregame show starts at 6:35 on CHOK.
