Legionnaires Drop Series Opener In Leamington

The Sarnia Legionnaires lost their series opener 4-3 in Leamington Thursday night.

A late goal was the difference, as the Flyers pulled ahead with under four minutes left in regulation.

Goaltender Jorgen Johnson was outstanding in his first GOJHL playoff game, making some big saves with his team on the penalty kill in the first and second periods. He finished with 29 saves on 33 shots.

Overall, it was an exciting back and forth game, that included an unsuccessful Leamington penalty shot with about six minutes left and the game tied at three.

Head Coach Mark Davis says they'll make a few adjustments before game two Saturday night.

He says overall he was happy with the game one effort, but they'll just need to limit the mistakes going forward.

"They got the breaks, we made a mistake near the end and it's in the back of the net," says Davis. "It was one of those games, you look at their second goal, it takes a weird bounce off one of our skates and goes into the net."

He says in a series that's as tight as this one, with two evenly matched teams, one small mistake could end up being the difference.

"The less mistakes we make, the less opportunities they get, simple as that," says Davis.

"This series is going to come down to who makes the most mistakes, and tonight we made the extra one, and we paid for it."

Zach Vanderwal, Ethan Dupont and Eric Marsh scored goals for Sarnia. The Legionnaires went one for ten with the man advantage, while killing off all six of Leamington's powerplays.

Game two is Saturday night at Sarnia Arena, game three back in Leamington Sunday evening.
