GM logo now gone from Detroit's RenCen

It is now very clear from the Windsor riverfront that General Motors has moved out of Detroit's iconic Renaissance Center.

The automaker's logo, which flashed GM brand names from the top of Michigan's tallest tower, has been removed from the 73-floor Marriott Hotel.

GM moved out of the complex earlier this year for its new headquarters inside the Hudson's Detroit skyscraper on Woodward Avenue. GM still owns the RenCen.

The lights on the two towers closest to the Detroit riverfront have also been turned off. The towers are set for future demolition as part of a massive reconstruction project.

"As part of our move into our new headquarters at Hudson’s Detroit earlier this year, we updated the exterior signage at the Renaissance Center, with the Detroit Marriott now being the featured logo on the building," said GM spokesman Kevin Kelly in an email to the Detroit Free Press. "Even with this change, General Motors’ commitment to Detroit and to the city’s riverfront and downtown remains as strong as ever."

Now occupying the space atop the RenCen hotel is the Marriott Hotels logo.

The digital signs have also shown the logos of Detroit's sports teams on days they play at home, or during playoff runs.

Real estate company Bedrock, run by billionaire Dan Gilbert of Rocket Mortgage, built the 681-foot Hudson's Detroit on the site of the J.L. Hudson's Department Store, which closed in 1983 and was imploded in 1998.
