Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have wrapped up a traffic campaign aimed at improving safety for both commercial and passenger vehicle drivers.
"Poor driving behaviours on the part of both commercial and non-commercial operators can lead to serious consequences and lengthy delays on major highways," said Traffic Safety and Marine Manager (West Region) Mike McConnell.
“Operation Safe Driver” ran between July 12 and July 18. According to police, 143 charges were laid across 13 detachment areas in the OPP’s West Region.
OPP officers focused on the top factors that lead to crashes, including speeding, improper lane changes, and following too closely.
Officers in Lambton County saw the largest number of drivers disobey signage, with seven, while Elgin County officers charged the most drivers for forgoing seatbelts.
Wellington County had the most speeders over the course of the campaign.
"It's every driver's responsibility to share our roads safely," McConnell said. "This is critical when large commercial vehicles are present."
