The most high-tech equipment is available at the Gordie Howe International Bridge to help the Canadian Border Service Agency intercept illicit materials and facilitate safe efficient crossings for all travelers.
"It's going to be the most futuristic port of entry that we have in terms of technology, in terms of detection equipment, in terms of personnel and the ability that we will have at that location to interdict narcotics, firearms and other items. I think we are going to be really well placed to do that," said Michael Prosia, CBSA Regional Director of Southern Ontario.
Prosia said while other crossings have similar technology, the new technology at the Gordie Howe International Bridge allows agents to work smarter and more efficiently.
"One example I'll use is the fact that it has fixed large-scale imaging technology. What that means is, in a fixed building where a commercial truck will be able to drive in and we will be able to X-ray what is inside of that conveyance and do that in a rapid fashion," said Prosia.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge is scheduled to open to vehicular traffic on July 27, 2026.
"On the CBSA side, we are ready to go; it's been quite an undertaking outfitting our port of entry, getting our personnel up to speed," said Prosia.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony with Canadian officials is happening on Friday, prior to the official opening of the bridge.
