Residents living in Windsor's Ward 6 may be asking themselves who will represent them on Windsor City Council if Joanne Gignac wins the upcoming federal election.
Gignac announced last week her intentions to seek the Conservative nomination in Windsor-Tecumseh. If she's chosen to represent the party, she'll run against New Democrat Cheryl Hardcastle and Frank Schiller from the Liberal Party.
Windsor's Manager of Records and Elections Chuck Scarpelli says city council would have two options: appoint a new councillor or hold a byelection. "It's roughly about one-tenth the cost of the regular election," says Scarpelli. "You're probably talking about $70,000."
If council chose to appoint a councillor, it wouldn't necessarily have to choose the runner-up from the last election in Ward 6, Alex Dennonville. "Names would be submitted and council would make a decision. Then by resolution, they would appoint someone into the position."
The federal election is October 19.
