The City of Windsor will soon be hearing from parties interested in taking over the retail space on the ground floor of the Pelissier St. parking garage, downtown.
Councillor Rino Bortolin says a report will come before council in a couple of months, simply setting up the criteria that the city will expect potential owners to meet. "We want to put it out to the private sector -- the private sector or public institutions, I guess -- to take over those units, to take them off our hands. (The City of Windsor is) horrible in the real estate business."
Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association Chair Larry Horowitz is just glad the space isn't being turned into more parking. "I'm euphoric. I think the City of Windsor, the councillors, took one step forward in terms of urban renewal."
If no interest is garnered by the city through this new process, Mayor Drew Dilkens warns that parking may become the only option. But both Horowitz and Bortolin are optimistic that won't be necessary.
