NBL Canada Commissioner Addresses Controversy

When newly minted National Basketball League of Canada Commissioner Dave Magley addressed over 60 fans, media members and Windsor Express personnel at the WFCU Centre Thursday evening, he made no attempt to shy away from the elephant in the room.

Many fans in attendance were on the edge of their seats to hear Magley discuss the league’s discipline actions for Windsor and the Halifax Rainmen after Halifax forfeited Game 7 of the championship in April, just hours prior to tip-off.

“To be quite frank, when the announcements came out, they were harsh, they were strong, they were a statement," says Magley.

A league board, comprised of team owners, met to decide what actions would be taken on Windsor and Halifax. Among those affected was Express Head Coach Bill Jones, who received a one-year ban from coaching.

Magley says most teams in the league have moved on from the incident and that negative attention toward Windsor’s controversial second-straight championship has died down.

“It was something that was significant that can never happen again," says Magley.
