Advance Notice For Border Backups

Border delays are often unavoidable, but researchers in Windsor are testing new technology that will predict backups hours in advance.

Bill Anderson with the Cross Border Institute at the University of Windsor says it will help the economy be more efficient.

"What we have in place now are sensors that give us the exact information," he says. "We're able to count the number of trips across the bridge, the number of trucks. We have five sensors that are reporting. This gives us an idea of how to measure the traffic patterns."

The study is geared towards truckers, but will eventually be available for passenger traffic too.

"More information on what to expect so they might adjust their schedule and you might try to spread out some of the traffic that way," says Anderson.

Officials have been collecting border traffic data since May. The technology is expected to be ready for truckers to use in about a year.
