More Smoke Detectors Needed

Fire Prevention Week is underway in Windsor.

This year's slogan is "Hear The Beep Where You Sleep," advocating the installation of smoke alarms in each room of your home. Currently, it's law to have just one working smoke detector on each floor.

Windsor Fire Chief Bruce Montone says another issue in fire prevention is residents overestimating their ability to control a blaze.

"More and more of them (residents) are staying behind and they're attempting to fight the fire, which grows exponentially. In a matter of minutes it can be 100-times its original size," he explains.

The number one cause of house fires continues to be unattended cooking.

Despite all of those factors, Montone says fire-related deaths in Windsor have decreased by 50% since 2012.
