Cheryl Hardcastle is holding onto Windsor-Tecumseh for the NDP.
The former Tecumseh deputy mayor carried on in retiring MP Joe Comartin's footsteps and held off Conservative challenger Jo-Anne Gignac.
Hardcastle feels she can still give the riding a strong voice in Ottawa despite the New Democrats being relegated to third party status in a majority Liberal government .
"I'm just really excited to know that I'm going to have an effective role in parliament," says Hardcastle. "The way it's designed is that you represent everyone. Once you're elected, you represent everyone in the riding."
Unofficial polling numbers show Hardcastle won with 61% support in the riding ahead of Gignac who just edged Liberal candidate Frank Schiller. Green Party candidate David Momotiuk finished fourth while Marxist-Leninist candidate Laura Chesnik rounded out the pack.
