Grade 9 Math Scores Dip Slightly

Both the public and Catholic school boards in Windsor have released their Grade 9 math results.

At the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, 88% of academic students scored the provincial standard or better. That's down from 91% of students tested during the 2013-14 school year.

A release from the board says 49% of applied students scored either a level three, the provincial standard, or level four compared with 54% the year before.

Board chair Barbara Holland admits she's concerned about this year's fluctuation but is still confident in administration, teachers and students.

"I'm certain our superintendents and curriculum consultants will take a hard look at the results and determine whether we need to do anything differently," she says.

The board says the gender gap between academic students was 1% favouring boys while it was 10% in the applied stream.

The Greater Essex County District School Board's results didn't change much from the year before. It says 84% of academic students achieved at least the provincial standard, down just 1% from the 2013-14 school year. Meanwhile, 54% of the applied stream met the standard. That's down just 2% from the year before.

A province-wide comparison isn't available this year since students from some school boards across Ontario didn't write the test last year because of an ongoing labour dispute with teachers.
