Budget Talks Extended In Amherstburg

Amherstburg's 2016 budget is taking over council's regular meeting set for Monday.

Council will debate a report looking at new hires part of administrative restructuring.

Mayor Aldo DiCarlo says as the budget stands now, residents will see a 2.25% increase in the municipal tax.

"I think it's a fair number. That is without the school board and the county [levies]. It may come down a bit, but I think that's a good, solid number considering everything that's been agreed to at this point," says DiCarlo.

The mayor thinks it's likely the budget will be approved before the end of the year and feels it's important that it is.

"With all the issues we've had in the past and as long as it took us to do the first one [2015 budget] I think it should really do well for council in showing the residents that we really did get it together and we're bringing Amherstburg to a different place," says DiCarlo.

The proposed 2.25% increase would mean about a $38 increase on a home assessed at $191,000. Council has approved in principle its operating and capital budgets as well as its water and waste water budgets. The budget is currently scheduled to be adopted by council on December 14.
