Devonshire Mall, the Town of Leamington and student Carlos Pena from Leamington District Secondary School are among those recognized by the Essex Region Conservation Authority at its recent Annual General Meeting.
The authority hands out awards every year to members and organizations in the community who have gone above and beyond to help improve the local environment.
General Manager Richard Wyma says the list also includes the Rt. Honourable Herb Gray Parkway project, the Little River Enhancement Group, and former City of Windsor engineer Mario Sonego.
"Whenever there was something to do he was always most concerned about the environmental implications," says Wyma. "The environmental master plan in the city and the parks master plan; these things were all done under his leadership."
The Town of Leamington picked up the Richard Pulleyblank Award for Municipal Environmental Achievement for creating trails, protecting waterfront land, and its commitment to help improve Lake Erie. The award is named after the authority's first chair.
The authority also looked back on projects and programs undertaken in the past year.
"We increased focus on water quality projects, particularly in the western basin of Lake Erie, planted 125, 450 trees, restored over 142 acres of habitat, created four new wetlands and worked with over 2,500 volunteers," says Windsor city councillor and board member Ed Sleiman.
