A 9V battery and some metal objects in a junk drawer are being blamed for a house fire in Tecumseh on Wednesday.
Tecumseh Fire Chief Doug Pitre says the fire at a home in the 800-block of Lacasse Blvd. in the town is another example of smoke alarms saving lives.
Pitre says a mother was awoken by a smoke alarm going off in the home. She headed to the basement and saw smoke. The chief says the mother was then able to get her baby and get out of the house. Pitre says the husband wasn't home at the time of the fire.
Fire crews responded to the blaze at 862 Lacasse Blvd. shortly before 5pm on Wednesday and dealt with heavy smoke on arrival.
Officials say the blaze caused $180,000 in damage.
The fire was put out quickly and no injuries were reported. However, the family of three have been displaced for the time being.
