Celebrating The Life Of Constable John Atkinson

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the murder of Windsor police Constable John Atkinson.

The Windsor Police Service Headquarters was filled with police, the Atkinson family and members of the community for a memorial service this morning to celebrate the life of the officer of 14 years, husband and father of two.

"John was an exceptional police officer. Just like he identified this drug deal that day in that parking lot nothing escaped him. He was keenly aware of his surroundings and he was a very confident and brave officer," says Police Chief Al Frederick.

On this day ten years ago at 2:07pm in the afternoon, Atkinson was shot and killed after approaching two suspicious individuals near a gas station on Pillette Rd. and Seminole St.

Widow Shelley Atkinson says this memorial marking the tenth anniversary of her husband's death has been the hardest one for her.

"I think it's because it's such a big milestone cause I remember when it did happen I remember thinking how's five years going to be? How's ten years going to be? And we're here today, and that to me is just surreal," says Shelley.

She says in those ten years she's kept the memory of her husband alive for her children Nicole and Mitchell through stories and photographs.

"He's thought of every day. He's spoken of every day. She'll do something and I'll be like 'you're so your dad' or Mitchell will say something. It's just nice to see them grow up and have his characteristics," says Shelley.

Windsor police asked residents to observe a moment of silence at 2:07pm this afternoon to reflect on the sacrifice Constable Atkinson made for this community.
