Pool Done Ahead Of Schedule

The new community pool at the WFCU Centre is set to open to the public July 4.

"There's so much need in east Riverside, young families, students, seniors. This is a phenomenal addition to our community," says Ward 7 Councillor Irek Kusmierczyk.

The construction of the 25 m pool, therapy pool and splash pad was completed two months ahead of schedule and under budget. The pool was originally slated to open mid-August and was budgeted at $6.7-million. The project was completed for $6.4-million.

The pool is needed as a warm-up facility for the FINA World Swimming Championships coming to Windsor in December.

"City council had the option at the time to either buy a temporary pool, put the temporary warm-up pool on one of the community rink ice surfaces and then tear it down and sell it at the end of the games. City Council in their wisdom said we're going to spend a little more money, we're going to get a permanent pool that will act as a legacy project for FINA. We'll be able to use it for the FINA games but it will be here for decades," says Mayor Drew Dilkens.
