WECDSB Still Pushing For New Catholic Central

Building a new Catholic Central High School is still a top priority for the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board.

The school tops the board's capital list that looks to let the Ministry of Education know which projects the board wants funded first.

Superintendent Mario Iatonna says the school has become a fixture at the top of the list.

"Catholic Central represents the oldest school we have that has not been addressed yet," says Iatonna. "The needs to rehab that school far exceed what it would cost to build a new school."

The projected cost to rebuilding Catholic Central is $25-million.

Iatonna says the old Windsor arena is still the planned site for a new school.

"It's just a matter of getting funding approval from the ministry and then we would meet with the [City of Windsor] to finalize a land deal for that property," says Iatonna.

He stresses the need to build a new Catholic Central is tremendous.

"We think that the students at Catholic Central now and in the future certainly deserve and environment that's more conducive to learning than the existing school," says Iatonna.

Christ the King Elementary School comes in second on the capital priority list needing renovations and an addition while Holy Names Secondary and St. John Vianney Elementary come in third and fourth respectively needing additions.

The Catholic board approved a secondary priority list as well which includes St. Peter, LA Demarais and HJ Lassaline schools.
