Street Lighting Remains Status-Quo

The City of Windsor will not spend an additional $150,000 to upgrade lighting within the Ottawa Street BIA.

Though the current lighting meets all standards, Windsor police were recommending more lighting for the pedestrian heavy area.

Chief Al Frederick says an investment in lighting and other environmental designs can have a major impact on policing.

"People can see the vehicles and vehicles can see pedestrians, and if there is a crime to occur witnesses have a better opportunity to identify the suspects," says Frederick.

The city has received a number of complaints regarding the lighting on the sidewalks on Ottawa St. after the completion of streetscaping in 2014. The project removed deteriorating light poles that had two light fixtures, one over the sidewalk and one over the street. These were replaced with LED fixtures with only one light source.
