City Wrapping Up Special Flood Pick-Up

The City of Windsor is looking for residents needing flood debris picked up to schedule appointments through 311 by Tuesday.

The special pick-up service for flood materials the city has been running is expected to end Thursday evening— meaning every street west and east of Walker Rd. impacted by flooding will have had at least one pass by city crews.

"It doesn't mean we're done though," says Anne-Marie Albidone, the city's manager of environmental services. "We certainly will continue to assist residents that need our help."

The deadline to schedule a pick-up is 7pm on Tuesday.

"The important thing is for people to call, because if they don't call then we may not get to them," says Albidone. "We chose next Tuesday because we feel that that's a sufficient amount of time. We're coming up to a three week mark now since the flood occurred."

The city reports 800 tonnes of material has been picked up through the special pick-up service in just the first three days, according to Albidone.

She says at this point it doesn't make much sense to continue going up and down every city street.

"For us to drive every street at this point would be very time consuming and it's just going to delay getting to those people that really do need the help," says Albidone.

Crews are set to begin the second round of the pick-up service on Friday and Saturday.

"We can't continue this collection forever," she says. "We do need to have some kind of deadline so that we can then say, 'this is exactly how much we picked up' and we can then go back and analyze how well did we do, what can we do differently next time."

The city's 311 call service has received 2,532 reports of flooded basements related to the record rainfall in September.
