Detroit Free Press Marathon Means Border Shut Down

The Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel will both shut down for a couple of hours Sunday morning for the Detroit Free Press Talmar Bank Marathon.

The event is held the third Sunday in October every year since 1978 and every year, thousands of runners take part.

The bridge will close at 5:45am and reopen at 9am, while the tunnel shuts down at 6:45am and resumes regular operations at 10am.

In Windsor, Riverside Dr., Goyeau St. between Riverside Dr. and Park St., and Park St. E to the tunnel will be closed until 10am.

The race starts in Detroit at 7am and runners will be released from the starting line in groups every two minutes.

Last year 3,802 people made it on the leaderboard. The winner was 24-year-old Zachary Ornelas of Ann Arbor, Michigan. He finished the race in 2:20:22. The first woman to cross the finish line in 2015 was Lyubov Denisova of New York City in 2:41:36.

The prize for the first-place finish in the open race is $4,000 and $2,000 in the master's race. If you break the record, though, you can win an additional $2,500. The record time for men was set by Greg Meyer of Boston in 1980 at 2:13:07, while the record for women was set in 2004 by Elena Orlova of Russia in 2:34:16.

The race is standard marathon length at 42 km (26.2 mi), is a Boston Marathon qualifying event, and boasts the only underwater mile in the world.
