Encouraging Teens To Drive Safely

The Windsor Police Service along with the Safety Village have been at high schools this week to spread messages about safe driving to students.

They hope teens take ownership of the message and spread it to their peers through social media- when they are not driving of course.

"I think that it's a really good initiative to have it peer on peer. To have them tell everybody even though I'm not a driver, I might be a passenger, let's spread this message, no texting and driving, zero tolerance for drinking and driving, or impaired driving by drugs," says Windsor Police Senior Constable Cealia Gagnon.

According to statistics provided by the Windsor police, 21% of collisions on Canadian roads involve teen drivers, while they make up only 12% of the driving population.

Michael Lucier, with the Windsor Essex Safety Village says it's important to be in the schools while students are just getting behind the wheel of a car.

"If you don't reach the kids before they start making bad decisions, it's a lot harder to change their decision-making behaviour afterwards," says Lucier.

The groups are visiting nine local high schools this week.
