Strengthening Oncology Care at WRH

Two oncology nurses at Windsor Regional Hospital will be getting some additional training thanks to an endowment in honour of a late patient.

The Daniel Johnson Memorial Education Fund was started by the Johnson family to help maintain a high standard of patient care on the oncology floor.

"We found that maybe there was an opportunity to give back by helping that oncology staff to learn about more recent developments in the area of pain management . Pain management was an area that my brother was challenged with. It really was difficult to manage that level of pain," says Catherine Falzone, sister of Daniel Johnson.

Megan Hennin and Kristin Smith who have both been working as a nurse for over 10 years are the recipients of this year's award. They will be given the opportunity to take an additional course or attend a conference in order to keep up with pain management techniques in the industry.

"It's nice to hear feedback. You come to work day-to-day and you try to provide that 100% and you try to make each family member and patient feel special and give them that quality of life and provide them support along their journey. Knowing that we are making that little bit of difference makes you feel good," says Kristin Smith.

The Johnson's family original donation was $30,000 to the Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation. In the last six years it has increased to $56,000due to interest, additional donations and special events.
