Capacity At WRH Spikes Again

Windsor Regional Hospital continues to struggle with over capacity issues as the flu bug makes its way through the community.

CEO David Musyj says it appeared as if numbers were stabilizing over the last week but they saw a spike again over the last 24 hours.

"It's back and it came back unfortunately with a vengeance, and again, we saw that just in literally the last 24 hours," says Musyj.

There are currently around 50 patients admitted to hospital over normal capacity. The acuity of the patients being admitted continues to be severe. This strand of flu is particularly hard on the elderly population. Musyj estimates the capacity concerns have cost the hospital around $2-million.

The hospital continues to work with the Ministry of Health and Erie St. Clair LHIN to create more bedded capacity in the system outside the acute care setting. Musyj says he hopes to have news in the next 24-48 hours.

Since the beginning of January, 20 surgeries have been cancelled at the Met and Ouellette campuses. Four of those surgeries were cancelled today. Of the 20 cancelled four have been rescheduled and performed.

The hospital is asking residents to utilize their primary care physicians and clinics and only come to the emergency room in a true emergency.
