The Humane Society will continue to provide animal control services to the City of Windsor at a subsidized rate.
Executive Direct Melanie Coulter says the $922,579 the city is paying the Humane Society does not cover all of the costs of the services they provide. However she says ultimately they agreed to the lesser contract because their supporters have indicated the services they provide to the city are important.
"Our donors have told us when the alternatives are some of the ones that were discussed that they would rather us continue to rely on them to supplement those services," says Coulter.
Other options the councillors could have considered for animal control were the Lakeshore Dog Pound or a municipally run facility.
The Humane Society originally submitted a bid for $1,039,556 for the animal control contract which is a 22% increase of the previous contract. Coulter says the bid was based on what the services cost the humane society over the last number of years.
"Our costs of performing the contract were higher then the value of the contract for a number of previous years and that's continuing and that is something we will have to make up in donations and fundraising," says Coulter.
The City of Windsor and the Humane Society have agreed to a 2% increase every year of the five year contract.
