LaSalle Opts Out Of Policing For Amherstburg

After being outbid in a request for proposals to take over emergency communications for the Town of Amherstburg, LaSalle is throwing in the towel.

Mayor Ken Antaya says there was only a brief discussion around the table before councillors decided there was no point.

"Communications is one thing," he says. "When you start talking about policing it's going to be a more complex submission. These types of things take a lot of effort and a lot of time, and when you feel maybe you haven't got a chance anyway?"

LaSalle's bid for emergency communications came in at around $1.4-million over five years.

"Windsor blew us out of the water. They blew everybody out of the water," he says.

The Windsor Police Service bid was for $653,000.

Antaya says there were also concerns about the impact of service in LaSalle if the town had become the service provider in Amherstburg too.

"If there's an event in Amherstburg and let's say we have two or three cars that are on the road -- and an occurrence happens in Amherstburg that requires all that manpower there, now all the sudden we've left our own community without a service."

The Ontario Provincial Police is expected to submit its bid in the next few months.
