The Windsor-Essex County Humane Society hopes to eventually adopt out eight dogs rescued after Hurricane Harvey hit Texas a few weeks ago.
The dogs, which are of various breeds, arrived in Windsor on Monday.
Executive Director Melanie Coulter says a local cat rescue brought them here from Houston.
"It was actually Moggy Cat Rescue. Their volunteers went down and retrieved these dogs and a few other dogs that went to rescue in London," says Coulter.
Magi-Cat Rescue took animals that had been in shelters before the storm, so those facilities have the capacity for animals found after Harvey.
The dogs will be quarantined for two weeks before they are adopted by new families.
As the hurricane struck Texas, many people were forced to abandon their pets when they evacuated. Other pets were lost, but Coulter says none of the dogs were abandoned by their owners in Houston when the hurricane hit.
"They definitely went through it. I'm sure they have some not great memories of the time," she says. "These aren't dogs that were found floating on cars or roofs."
Most of the dogs are larger breeds.
