The Windsor Police Service is warning the community about a Canadian Revenue Agency scam that is once again circulating in the community.
The scam involves getting a phone call from someone claiming to be from the CRA. The person says you owe the government money and tries to collect the debt by asking for money grams or pre-paid cards.
Most recently, a member of the community received a call from someone claiming to be a member of the Windsor Police Service and an immigration officer. The victim was pressured into making payments of $4575 through money grams and pre-paid cards. In this case, the caller was able to spoof their number to display a Windsor Police Service phone number.
Windsor police say they would never contact a member of the public and threaten arrest for an outstanding CRA debt. They say if you are suspicious of a call, hang up and call police by dialing 519-255-6700.
