The Essex Region Conservation Authority is watching for potential flooding.
ERCA has issued a watershed conditions statement for portions of Essex County's Lake Erie shoreline from Monday evening into Wednesday morning.
The areas most affected are the south and west shorelines of Pelee Island, the west shoreline of Pelee Island National Park, the Leamington shoreline west of the park, and the shorelines of Essex, Kingsville, and Amherstburg.
ERCA Water Resources Engineer, John Henderson says as of Monday night, lake levels were below flood watch criteria. However, wind speed and direction raises the chance of wave overtopping and water spray causing nearshore erosion. Breakwall damage is also possible.
Environment Canada has not issued any weather statements, but the forecast for Windsor-Essex calls for sustained winds of 30 km/hr with gusts up to 50 km/hr Monday night. These gusts could reach 70 km/hr during the day Tuesday, before tapering off Tuesday evening.
ERCA suggests that people should take extra caution, and avoid shoreline areas during wind events. The combination of slippery banks and waves overtopping break walls can be dangerous.
