Caron Ave. Building To Get The Wrecking Ball

A Windsor heritage building is about to get a date with a demolition crew.

Windsor City Council examined and approved Monday an emergency demolition order to begin tearing down the former Lufkin Rule Building at 673 Caron Ave.

This is one of two historic buildings that had recently been put on the city's shortlist of demolitions. The other is the former Riverside Brewing Company building on Riverside Dr. E near the marina.

John Revell, the city's chief building official, told councillors Monday that the Lufkin Rule Building had no hope of ever being rehabilitated. He says on a recent walk-through, severe wood rot in the floors was discovered.

The city says the two-storey structure was built around 1904. It was placed on the city's unofficial heritage registry in 1989 and was upgraded to official heritage status in 2008. The city took control of the property five years ago after the previous owners let it go into tax default.

With the emergency demolition order in place, the city says they hope to begin the tear-down process after the holidays.
