Atkinson's Name Remembered Through Dedication

A tunnel that leads out of St. Clair College onto Hwy. 401 is now named in honour of fallen Windsor Police Senior Constable John Atkinson.

The tunnel was dedicated Friday to mark the 11th anniversary of his death. Constable Atkinson was shot and killed in the line of duty near Seminole St. and Pillette Rd. on May 5, 2016.

His widow, Shelley Atkinson says knowing the community has not forgotten his sacrifice gives her comfort.

"This community, Windsor-Essex County, has been by our side from the moment, the second it happened and has never left our side. Our family is forever grateful," says Atkinson.

This is the first time the Ministry of Transportation has named a provincial tunnel after a municipal police officer. Hundreds of law enforcement, community members, and dignitaries gathered at St. Clair College for the tribute this morning.

"It's a recognition by the community, that the entire community feels all the same that John's memory is so important to our community that it's going to last as a symbol forever," says Windsor Police Chief Al Frederick.

A scholarship in Constable Atkinson's honour was also announced at the dedication. Each year two students enrolled at St. Clair College in the Protection, Security and Investigation, or Police Foundations programs will be awarded $2,500 in Atkinson's name. The scholarship was established by Windsor Family Credit Union.
