The consortium that will build the new Gordie Howe International Bridge is expected to be selected in June.
Minister of Infrastructure Amarjeet Sohi says the government is fully committed to the project and confident in the leadership of the Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority. Sohi was in the region Monday and Tuesday to visit the site of the new bridge and meet with stakeholders from both sides of the border.
"Our goals are that by June we will have the proponent selected and by September we will have the actual agreement signed between the WDBA and the selected proponent," says Sohi.
He says construction of the actual bridge will begin at that time but preparation work will continue throughout the summer.
"Whichever consortium is selected to build this bridge will give us a timeline for the completion. We feel this is a more responsible approach instead of having an arbitrary deadline," says Sohi.
He says the consortium will be responsible for meeting that deadline as set out in their contract.
