The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit says it has been able to confirm a new case of canine flu in the region.
That makes eight cases now.
Health officials again are telling dog owners if they suspect their pet may be suffering from the virus, to keep them away from other dogs. Canine influenza, H3N2, can be very contagious, especially in Canada where immunization against the infection is rare.
Most dogs with influenza do not get seriously ill and will exhibit symptoms similar to kennel cough. However, it is wise to isolate any dog that is sick for at least four weeks. Any other pets in the home, including cats, should also be isolated.
Dog owners are asked to watch for symptoms like a cough, decreased appetite, nasal and eye discharge, and fever.
Since the virus can survive in the environment for up to 24 hours, it is also important to disinfect anywhere where the dog may be and to wash your hands frequently.
Cats can also get dog flu, although it is rare.
