Rick Mercer Visits Local High School

Rick Mercer was at a local high school this morning to film his last on-location shoot of the Rick Mercer Report.

The Rick Mercer Report is ending after 15 years on the air.

Holy Names High School won the Spread the Net Challenge, raising the most money of any school in the country to buy bed nets for communities in Africa.

"What I promise students is that we'll go to their school, we'll show the country what a great school it is and I had no problem doing that this morning," says Mercer. "We got everyone on their feet, everyone dancing, everyone chanting, everyone raising money for bed nets."

The students raised over $2500 for the campaign, which will buy 250 nets for communities in Africa.

"We decided to take on this campaign because we realized that malaria affects so many people and it kills almost half a million people every year and its the leading cause of death in kids under five in Africa," says Gabriella Botica, Grade 12 student at Holy Names High School.

Mercer says shooting episodes like this is what he will miss most about doing the Rick Mercer Report.

"I love the travel, I love all the people I get to meet. Spread the Net is one of my favourite episodes to do every year. It makes you feel good about yourself, about the country and about the future when you see young people doing things like this," says Mercer.

The episode featuring students from Holy Names will air April 3, 2018.
