Jobless Rate Inches Upwards Again In Windsor

Statistics Canada says Windsor's unemployment rate inched upward last month, although the labour participation rate continues to grow slowly.

The agency's latest Labour Force Survey says the jobless rate in March was 5.2%, an increase of 0.3% from February when it was 4.9%.

The labour participation rate had increased to 59.1%, compared to March 2017 when it was 58.9%.

While the unemployment rate measures the percentage of people who are currently on employment benefits, the labour participation rate measures how many people are actually working.

The national rate was unchanged last month, remaining at 5.8% as the economy added 32,000 jobs, most of them full-time. Construction jobs saw the greatest growth with another 18,000 positions. In public administration, another 12,000 jobs were added across Canada, and in agriculture, 8,100 positions were created. Self-employment did not change much with 97,000 Canadians saying they work for themselves.

Ontario's jobless rate also did not change. It was still 5.5% in March.

Compared to Windsor, London's unemployment rate fell 0.4% from February to 6.3%, while the labour participation rate 60%, down from 60.9% the year before.

Sherbrooke, Quebec boasts the lowest rate in the country at 3.6%, while St. John's, Newfoundland had the highest, 14.1%.
