A display of big machines takes over the WFCU Centre this weekend.
The city of Windsor presents its eighth annual Meet-A-Machine event Saturday in the arena's parking lot.
The popular event is part of a community effort to promote literacy in Windsor-Essex, especially with the school year winding down and students being off for the summer. The Windsor Public Library has maintained a presence at Meet-A-Machine for years.
All kids attending will receive a book.
Multiple vehicles from various law enforcement, fire and emergency response departments will be on public display, so people of all ages can sit in them, walk through them and learn how they operate.
Meet-A-Machine has also featured school buses, Transit Windsor buses, maintenance vehicles, trash collection trucks, Canadian Forces vehicles, and even funeral coaches. The 2017 event had over 60 vehicles participating, according to a video (shown below) produced by the city at last year's event.
Meet-A-Machine is presented through the city's Children's Services department, and Early ON, the network of Ontario child and family centres.
The event opens for a "sensory hour" at 9am, geared toward children with autism and special needs. The full-fledged portion runs from 10am to 2pm. Admission is free along with parking.
