Road Closures Announced For Ford Fireworks

One of Windsor's most-anticipated yearly events takes place Monday night.

The 60th Ford Fireworks will set off at approximately 9:55pm for a loud, bright, colourful 25-minute show, one of the largest in North America. The annual display celebrates the upcoming birthdays of Canada on July 1, and the U.S. on July 4.

Over a million people watch the show live from the riverfronts of both Windsor and Detroit each year.

With that, Windsor police announce a series of road closures to ensure the crowds of people expected downtown can navigate as freely as possible.

The closures are expected to begin at 6pm, affecting virtually all roads bounded by the Ambassador Bridge, Wyandotte St., Devonshire Rd. and the Detroit River.

The following roads will be designated as "no stopping" between noon on Monday and 2am Tuesday, according to WPS Sergeant Steve Betteridge. These will be marked, and violators will be towed at the owner's expense:

•Glengarry Ave. and Aylmer Ave. from Wyandotte St. to Riverside Dr. •McDougall St. from Tuscarora St. to Giles Blvd. •Victoria Ave. from Wyandotte St. to Erie St.

Bicyclists are being asked not to ride in areas where crowds may be significant. Bike and e-bike parking will be available in Charles Clark Square from 7pm to 11:30pm, courtesy of the Windsor Bicycling Committee.

People not wanting to fight the crowds or look for parking are encouraged to use Transit Windsor's shuttle service, courtesy of Zehrs. Free buses will begin leaving the Sydney Ave. side of Devonshire Mall at 6pm and end at 9:30pm. Return trips begin immediately following the finale of the fireworks display, and end at 12:15am Tuesday.

McDougall St. has been set aside as a dedicated bus route.

Fireworks fans wanting to use a taxicab should go to Pitt St. at Ferry St. on the west side of the viewing area, or Chatham St. at Glengarry Ave. on the east.

Alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the closure area.

Specific road closures can be seen on the map below.
