Windsor Seeks Public Input On Compensation For Mayor, Council

City of Windsor officials want you to tell them how much you think the mayor and city council should be making.

The municipality is conducting a council compensation review for those who will be elected to those offices in October. The purpose of this review is to make sure that the mayor and city councillors are being reasonably compensated based on the duties of their offices.

The last time this was done was in 2003, and the previous time councillors got a raise was in 2005, by a 1.9% margin.

The review is taking place just as the federal government is preparing to abolish the current 1/3 tax exemption for elected officials, which will have an impact on compensation for many of them across the province. The loss of the exemption, due to take place in 2019, will result in less take-home pay for elected officials who get this allowance.

The current base pay for the mayor, a full-time position, is $86,895, with committee and board appointments pushing the annual compensation to $174,289.

For city council, which is a part-time position, the current base pay is $28,770 a year, with board and committee appointments bringing the total to $39,779.

The city has put together a short, online survey so people can have a say on this issue. A pair of public meetings will follow in August.

For those who do not have access to a computer at home or at a library branch, hard copies of the survey are available at the following customer care centres:

  • Adie Knox Herman Recreation Complex
  • Optimist Community Centre
  • Gino & Liz Marcus Community Complex
  • Forest Glade Community Centre
  • Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex
The survey will be live through the end of July.
