Committee Approves Jackson Park Washroom Demolition

The City of Windsor has begun the process of making improvements to one of its jewels.

City council's Planning, Heritage and Economic Development Committee agreed Monday to send a report to full council recommending that the current maintenance and washroom buildings at Jackson Park be demolished.  The report also recommends that council authorize the city planner to move forward with the site plan application for new washrooms and a maintenance building, plus improvements to the park's walking trails, drives and parking lots.

Council originally approved the project in April.

Mayor Drew Dilkens told BlackburnNewsWindsor.com at the time that the success of Bright Lights Windsor, the city's Christmas light spectacular, put the issue of the washrooms centre-stage.

“The washrooms there are old, and they’re not accommodating for an event that attracted 60,000 people to Jackson Park and they’re not year-round bathrooms,” said Dilkens.

In addition to the washrooms not being available year-round, they are also not wheelchair accessible and have no temperature control. The building was completed in 1965.

The project also includes resurfacing and widening the parking lots, which are currently gravel and can get muddy in bad weather.

The full council is expected to sign off on the demolition of the old buildings and work is expected to begin soon after.

Dilkens said he hopes to have the new buildings in place before the next edition of Bright Lights Windsor.
