Dry Conditions Prompt Burn Ban In Tecumseh

There's a burn ban in Tecumseh until further notice.

Tecumseh Fire and Rescue Services says the lack of rain has led to increased dry conditions, which are ideal for the rapid spreading of fire.

They say the burn ban applies to all of Tecumseh and no permits will be issued until further notice.

“A ban on open burns is normal in these dry conditions,” says Bob Hamilton, Tecumseh Fire & Rescue Services Fire prevention officer. “Residents can still use their barbecues and propane-fueled tables, however, we request that no open fires in pits or other facilities be held until we receive significant rainfall to wet the ground enough.”

Residents are encouraged to think fire safety while outside including: • Extinguishing cigarettes or cigars in ashtrays or buckets of sand • Abstaining from the use of fireworks or sparklers • Keeping fire tables and fire pits within small areas and not leaving them unattended • Using battery-operated flashlights or lanterns instead of candles • Removing any flammable materials like leaves, branches and wood that could ignite • Ensuring barbecues and outdoor stoves are away from buildings and fences

The town requests that rural residents be extra mindful of the potential for ignition in areas where fire is a tool to remove debris.

Tecumseh fire officials say fines during a burn ban include cost recovery for the Tecumseh Fire & Rescue Services and could be greater than $500.
