Marchionne Mourned But Legacy Celebrated

The City of Windsor and community leaders are mourning the death of Sergio Marchionne.

He died Wednesday at the age of 66.

"We mourn the loss of someone who left a lasting legacy in our community," says Mayor Drew Dilkens.

Dilkens has ordered flags at all city locations to be lowered to half-staff in honour of the commitment and dedication shown by Marchionne to Windsor and its residents.

The mayor says the community thanks Marchionne and sends its deepest condolences to the Marchionne family. A book of condolences will be available in the lobby of City Hall for anyone wishing to express their thoughts and sympathies.

"Truly the end of an era, R.I.P.," says Former Windsor-West MPP Sandra Pupatello. "A proud Canadian-Italian and a proud car-maker."

Former Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Dwight Duncan tweeted that "he was very sad to learn of the passing of car legend Sergio Marchionne. He made a huge difference in so many lives."

On Twitter, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder said "he was saddened to hear about the death of Sergio Marchionne. We often joked about how we were just two accountants who started our careers across the Detroit River from each other - Sergio in Windsor and me in Detroit."

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles tweeted "all of us at FCA feel privileged to have worked alongside a courageous leader like Sergio Marchionne, a man of enormous humanity and intelligence. In this moment of sadness, we join with his family in remembering him with immense affection."

"It's sad news to hear about the loss of Sergio Marchionne," Unifor National President Jerry Dias said. "Sergio was a true visionary who leaves behind a strong legacy at FCA. My condolences to his family, friends and colleagues."

On Facebook, Unifor Local 444 President Dave Cassidy wrote condolences to the entire family of Sergio Marchionne. "Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace."

The Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association of Windsor (CIBPA) is also expressing its deepest condolences to the entire Marchionne family. CIBPA says he was a man that did a lot for Windsor and helped CIBPA Windsor do a lot for the Italian community. "Thank you Sergio!! Rest in peace!!"

Lorraine Goddard, Chief Executive Officer, United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County, says it's so sad to learn of the passing of Sergio Marchionne. "A true leader and legend."
